Taking advantage of the opportunities business travel delivers to grab some much-needed R&R is becoming the norm for time-poor business owners.
Tacking on a few days before or after a business trip for leisure is fast becoming a trend with business owners all over the globe. In fact, 2017 research found over one third (37%) of business travellers have extended their trip for leisure purposes in the past year.
The ‘Extending Business Travel into Leisure Time’, Bleisure Study found millennials are the most likely to embrace the bleisure trend, with almost half (48%) opting to extend business trips. While a third of Gen-Xers are keen to combine business and pleasure.
“Business travel is a lifestyle for many of our guests and we’re seeing a growing desire by these travellers to add a leisure component to their trip and experience the destination beyond the meeting room,” said Kelly Phillips, SVP Global Engagement & Strategic Accounts, Hilton.
The study found typically business travellers will extend their trip for up to three days, opting to use the time to soak up some local atmosphere. The most common reasons business travellers identify for taking bleisure trips are to visit a destination where they like to spend their time (43%) or visit a new destination they wanted to see (38%).
Keen to explore international destinations, millennials are driving the trend, however the report suggests the demand to extend trips is increasing overall, proving many business owners are noting the benefits of bleisure.
Business travellers taking long-haul trips can particularly benefit from bleisure.
Giving yourself or your employees extra time to decompress before and after a business trip will make business travel far more pleasurable. Imagine you arrive for a conference a day early and depart a day later. You have time to get your jet lag under control, time to relax and time to grasp local customs. You will connect with clients in more meaningful ways and you’ll be less likely to feel burnt out.
Businesses looking to attract talented employees should also consider the benefits of adding a bleisure policy. According to the BGH Bleisure report 78% of respondents agreed that adding leisure days to business travel adds value to their work assignments. Six out of 10 respondents said they are more likely to take bleisure trips today than they were five years ago. While 73% of travellers felt bleisure opportunities benefit them as an employee.
However, it’s not simply business owners and their employees benefiting from bleisure. More than half (54%) of business travellers report when they take bleisure trips they take their family members with them. Of those who don’t, 28% say they would like to combine business trips with family travel.
Savvy business owners looking to extend the benefits of business travel with family members are turning to point hacking to lessen the expense and share the rewards.
