Australia was in the midst of the Great Depression when Kerry Matthews’ grandfather and great grandfather took up the option to purchase a local realty and reopen it under the moniker R Matthews & Son. 85 years later the business is still going strong, passed down through the generations.
“Two of my grandfather Leslie’s sons, Trevor and Ken worked in partnership for 48 years in the business until Ken’s retirement,” says daughter Kerry of the family dynasty.
Today Trevor and his wife Lynn (Kerry’s Mum and Dad) are directors of the company and their three children (Michelle, Kerry and Russell) work in the business.
Kerry tells KBB over the years the business has weathered its fair share of storms.
“The first storm came when Trevor’s father died suddenly and at just 21 years of age, he took over the running of the family business. Then there were Industry storms such as development, technology changes and legislation that have all rocked the boat, but Matthews Real Estate has managed to sail on through, surviving and thriving in a complicated industry.”
The business is strong on succession planning, currently, Matthews Real Estate is transitioning to the fourth generation. Family patriarch Trevor Matthews has worked for over 55 years cementing valuable relationships and giving back to his community, setting a great example for how to successfully blend business and family.
Kerry says family values underpin everything they do in the business, with Matthews Real Estate valuing “honesty, trust and loyalty” above all else.
“You can’t survive more than 85 years in business without doing lots of things right over the years,” adds Kerry. “Evidence of this is seen in the relationships we have made which truly span generations.”
While other agencies have been swallowed up by the big realty brands, Matthews Real Estate has managed to remain independent, offering a large range of property services including valuations and body corporate management
Matthews has a long-standing relationship with the Real Estate Institute of Queensland which continues today in Trevor being awarded Lifetime Membership in 2014.
Kerry credits much of the family’s success to its shared values and the determination and passion of her father.
“I think what my grandfather and great-grandfather started was something special. The way that my father picked up all the pieces and carried on for his family when his Dad died was truly inspiring, and the passion for continuing this legacy exists in me, my sister and brother too.
“We hold very dearly the legacy that has been created by the Matthews’ that have come before us, and we’re very proud to carry on the tradition of service in an industry that we have quite literally grown up with.”
