Leigh Cummings is passionate about numbers. This year the Newcastle local’s bookkeeping business, Account Aspects, clocks up 15 years in operation and Cummings attributes her success to her passion to help small business owners realise their potential.
Cummings told Kochie’s Business Builders most small business owners crave support and wanted something more from a bookkeeper than paperwork entered and BAS returns lodged.
“There was a burden felt when faced with bookkeeping which took time away from business and families,” Cummings explained. “When assisting business customers daily, [we found] they shared their struggles with us on organising paperwork, understanding GST reporting and managing cashflow. Business owners are stretched for time. Using cloud solutions, we are able to implement integrated solutions such as POS, scheduling and job management solutions increasing efficiency and giving back time to the business owners.”
Cummings says with 15 years in business she has had the opportunity to see many of her client’s businesses grow.
“Our business has given us the chance to work with amazing business owners following their dreams. The pace in which change has occurred can be overwhelming, although for us it builds our passion.”
When running your own business sometimes it can take over. You can find that there is not enough time in the day to complete all your tasks
Indeed Cummings believes it’s integral for businesses of any kind to stay up to date with the latest technology and at Account Aspects she fuels that passion by delivering her clients with the best tools for their business.
“We wanted to help business owners use their numbers to make decisions and create opportunities for growth,” she says. “We use Xero and Addon software to find solutions to solve inefficiencies in their business that would save them both time and money.”
As a small business owner herself, Cummings is well aware of the need to maintain a work-life balance.
“When running your own business sometimes it can take over. You can find that there is not enough time in the day to complete all your tasks and meet deadlines,” she says. “Having a family, it is really important to me to prioritise a work-life balance and make time for the things I love doing.”
Fortunately for Cummings she is well supported by other staff – and she suggests any small business owner who is struggling for time should consider the addition of a staff member to lighten the load.

“Bringing staff into your business can improve your work-life balance, although they must be the right match for your business. Their work ethic, personality and experience are all important aspects. My staff are handling confidential information in which a trusted relationship must be formed.”
Nonetheless, Cummings stresses making decisions for any business can be risky
“The decision to put on staff and to move into a commercial office was difficult [for me] but have been some of my best decisions.”
Cummings tells KBB the future for Account Aspects is bright.
“Our vision is to continue to empower business owners with purpose and passion so they can live an indulgent lifestyle.”
