Just one day left to make use of JobMaker Hiring credit!

- April 29, 2021 2 MIN READ

The ATO is encouraging businesses to take advantage of the JobMaker Hiring Credit as the 30 April deadline approaches.

Off the back of the latest employment figures which show more than 300,000 additional jobs have been created since October 2020, businesses that have employed new young people are encouraged to check if they are eligible to claim the JobMaker Hiring Credit.

Under the scheme, employers can receive up to $10,400 per year for each new job they fill with an eligible employee aged 16 to 29 years, and up to $5,200 a year for each eligible employee aged 30 to 35 years.

Check the JobMaker eligibility

To be eligible new employees must:

  • be 16 to 35 years old
  • commence employment between 7 October 2020 and 6 October 2021
  • work or be paid for an average of at least 20 paid hours per week during the reporting period, and
  • have received the JobSeeker Payment, Parenting Payment or Youth Allowance (except if they are receiving the allowance because they are undertaking full-time study or are a new apprentice) for at least 28 consecutive days (or 2 fortnights) in the 84 days (or 6 fortnights) prior to starting employment.

The scheme’s first JobMaker period ran from 7 October 2020 to 6 January 2021. Employers can claim payments for eligible additional employees hired during this period until 30 April 2021.

To claim and receive payments for this period, eligible employers need to:

  1. Register – via ATO online services, Online services for business, or through their registered tax or BAS agent by 30 April.
  2. Nominate eligible additional employees – by running payroll events through Single Touch Payroll (STP) enabled software by 27 April.
  3. Claim payments – using ATO online services or Online services for business or through their registered tax or BAS agent by 30 April.

ATO urges employers to see if they qualify for JobMaker

Deputy Commissioner James O’Halloran said: “As the deadline to claim for the first period approaches on 30 April, I encourage all employers to see if they qualify for the scheme, and if eligible, claim the JobMaker Hiring Credit payments.

“You can register at any time until the scheme ends. You only need to register once, but you must do it before the end of the claim period for the first JobMaker period you want to claim for.

“Employers do not need to satisfy a turnover test for their business and those who want more information can go to the ATO website for a step by step guide on how to claim or contact their tax or BAS agent.

“You can also use the JobMaker Hiring Credit payment estimator to calculate the payment you could receive,” Deputy Commissioner O’Halloran said.
