How to reboot your creative edge in business

Do you ever find yourself bored with your business? Have the systems that you have set up, whilst they may successfully fulfil the needs they were designed for, somehow become stagnant? Are you frustrated with employees who never seem to fully understand your vision and priorities no matter what you say or do? asks Simone Milasas.

If your business has advanced beyond the startup phase, you have likely answered yes to at least one of these questions at one time or another.

The startup phase of business creation is exciting for most. Everything is new. Questions are being asked. Systems and processes are being explored and created. High energy. New ideas. Innovation and inspiration abound. But, once the business is up and running, especially if it is running successfully, it can be easy to settle into the rut of maintenance rather than staying on the creative edge where everything continues to expand and ultimately thrive.

Businesses that continue to grow and increase in their success are businesses that function on the creative edge.

How to include the four elements of creative edge into your daily business

1. Never stop asking questions

A common point of view among business owners is that having the right answers is the key to success. The idea is that as the owner of the business, you are meant to know everything, to be the expert, to do things right. The problem with this point of view is that if you think you have the right answer, you stop asking questions. When you stop asking questions, you are no longer exploring other possibilities. When you are no longer exploring other possibilities, the energy and dynamics of your business become stagnant.

The creative edge of business is about giving up the point of view that you have to get it right and asking questions instead. Here are some questions you can ask:

  • What else is possible here that I have never considered?
  • Where is my energy required today?
  • What future would I like to see for me, my family, my business and the world?

All of these questions are designed to take you beyond the limitations of your cognitive mind, which allows new ideas and insights to come in.

2. Is it boredom or is it time for change?

In years past, I have shut down businesses that were successfully running because I was bored with them. Once things were established, it wasn’t fun for me anymore. I have come to realise that boredom is actually nothing more than information that it is time for something to change. The business requires something else. I require something else.

The next time you feel bored with your business, ask, “What would I have to choose to change for this to be fun again?” And, “What can I add to my life and business that would create more for me, for my employees, for the business and for the world?”

You actually don’t need to close a business just because you are bored.  Perhaps it’s time to rearrange a few things to create a different set of possibilities.

3. Be willing to change anything and everything all the time

 When things are running smoothly within a business, it is easy to stop asking questions and exploring other possibilities. Why would you? Everything is working. This is one of the most common mistakes I see business owners making. Things are always changing, it is the way the world works, and if you are not asking questions and if you are not willing to change things you will get left behind. The Kodak company is one of many examples. They dominated the photography industry. They were unwilling to change what had been extremely successful, which led to digital photography taking over. By the time they caught up to the change that was required to stay competitive, they were too late as other companies now dominated the industry.

Every morning when you wake up, let go of everything that you have decided your business is and everything you have decided it should be. Be willing to throw all the parts and pieces, even the ones that are working, up into the air and ask, “If I didn’t have to do the same things today that I did yesterday, what would I choose? What would I create? What would I change? The willingness to change anything is what allows you and your business to thrive in the creative edge.

4. Business systems need to be malleable

Systems are required to support business operations and growth. Systems are meant to be malleable, meaning flexible and able to change. Oftentimes, people get comfortable with systems and rather than looking from the perspective of asking questions and always being willing to change, those systems become, “The way we do things.” Have you ever heard someone say, “We’ve been doing this for 20 years. That’s just the way that it is.”? Those words are the indicator that a malleable system has now become a solid structure, and there is no room for expansion and growth; rather, maintenance and stagnation.

To create systems that are malleable and ever-changing, daily destroy and uncreate everything you have decided about how something is ‘supposed’ to be done. Ask, “If it didn’t have to have to be this, what else would be possible? If this wasn’t the way we do things because it is the way we have always done things, what else would I discover?”

Maintenance of a business leads to destruction. For some businesses, it may take a while, but ultimately, the lack of creativity and inspiration catches up. Building your business by implementing the elements of the creative edge not only keeps you and your business thriving but also makes it much more fun!

Don’t look for the right answers; ask questions instead. When you are feeling bored with things, look for what can be added and changed. Never be so committed to an idea, process, product or system that you are unwilling to change it; rather, be willing to let everything transmute. Destroy and uncreate every ‘supposed to’ and ‘it’s just the way it is done’ that you have in your business.
