How to choose happiness to conquer stress in business and life

- March 20, 2023 3 MIN READ

Perhaps you have concluded that when your business attains a certain level of success, then you can relax and be happy. I invite you to consider a different perspective; the perspective that happiness can be a way of living in all areas, including business, and that it can start now, writes Joy of Business founder, Simone Milasas.

My friend and co-founder of Access Consciousness, Dr. Dain Heer told me long ago, “Money follows joy. Joy does not follow money.”

That statement has stayed with me ever since and it has proven to be true. When I choose to be happy – yes, it is a choice – money and success in business follows.

Choosing happiness in business

Here are three common stressors that keep people from choosing happiness in business, and tools to change and choose happiness anyway:

1. Money

Managing finances for a business can add a fair amount of stress to owners. The expenses of payroll, building upkeep, taxes and more, can be a heavy weight.

What if it did not have to be? Whatever the financial situation of your business, you can either use it as an excuse to not create something greater or you can change it.

Ask, “What other revenue streams are available to generate and create more money?” Also ask, “What else is possible with money that I haven’t considered?” Asking questions disrupts the autopilot of worry and opens the door to possibilities you may have not yet considered.

Money is not the source of creation. You are the source of creation. If you make money significant and meaningful, it will always control you. Money can contribute to you if you ask.

2. Frustration with employees

When you have staff members who are not performing in their jobs the way you would like them to, you do not have to be at the effect of it. Remember, your happiness is always your choice, and no one can take it away unless you let them.

It takes a lot of energy to be cranky and frustrated for any length of time, so when you find yourself in that state, flip it around by asking a question. Questions always empower you to choose and be something different. Conclusion will keep you stuck in your chosen limitation.

Ask, “What do I love about being frustrated?” Notice the answer that comes up, it can either be energetic or cognitive, and then destroy and uncreate it all and ask the question again. After a few times of doing this, you’ll notice that the frustration starts to dissipate.

3. Not enough time

There are lots of moving parts and pieces in business which can lead to the point of view that there is never enough time to get things done. When you decide that there is too much to do with not enough time to do it, what tends to occur is that you stop caring for you. Everything becomes about doing and performing, and the things and people that nurture you drop to the bottom of your priority list.

Have you ever noticed this does not actually work? When you care for you, you are able to get more done faster and easier than when you soldier on, neglecting you.

Take time to get up and move your body. Go for a walk. Be out in nature. I also invite you to take one hour each day and one day each week to do whatever is fun and nurturing for you. When you make you a priority, when you take care of your body, you are happier, and that increases your productivity. Dynamically.

There is a point of view when you are making you a priority, you are being selfish. What if that is one of the biggest lies you have ever been told? What if you being you is the magic you can be here? What if you being you and choosing what works for you creates a greater world, including the workplace? What if today you start to explore what that is for you, with no judgement, just choice?

You may know business owners who operate under a lot of stress for the reasons above as well as others. What if that does not have to be your reality? What if, no matter what is going on, you can ask questions and have happiness in business NOW?

Remember, money follows joy. Joy does not follow money. Choose joy and enjoy the adventure of living.
