How to build a six figure business in 12 months

- February 22, 2024 3 MIN READ

The journey to building a six-figure business is an exhilarating challenge, but can you pull it off while still maintaining your full-time job, paying your mortgage and having some semblance of a social life? Business coach Jim Cocks says, ‘Yes, you can’.

It’s a path I’ve navigated, and I’ve aimed to distil the essence of what it takes to transition from the corporate world’s predictability to the dynamic terrain of entrepreneurship. So for just a moment, allow me to be your coach so that you, too, can quit your job and live a life on your own terms

The first thing I realised on this journey was that dissatisfaction with the status quo (or hitting complete rock bottom) could be a powerful catalyst for change. The corporate world, with its rigid structures and endless cycles, often leaves little room for personal fulfilment or creative expression. That realisation hit me hard, but it also lit the spark of ambition. I wanted more than just a paycheck—I craved meaning, autonomy, and the freedom to create something of my own.

Embracing Change

Transitioning to entrepreneurship is about embracing uncertainty and finding comfort in the uncomfortable. It’s about viewing every setback as a stepping stone and every challenge as a new opportunity for growth. This mindset shift is crucial. The road is fraught with challenges, but the resilience to persevere is what separates dreamers from doers.

Building a successful business isn’t just about having a groundbreaking idea; it’s about execution, adaptation, and connection.

Three Simple Steps to set your business up for success:

Ignite your passion

Everything starts with passion. It’s the fuel that drives you, the light that guides you in the darkness. Find what makes your heart race and what issue you’re passionate about solving, and let that passion be the cornerstone of your business. Your enthusiasm will not only motivate you but also attract others to your cause. Also, remember that money is the afterthought of creating a business you absolutely love. Yes, it needs to be profitable, and you need to plan. But before all of that, if you create the right brand and message so people connect with you and what you have to offer, the money will come.

Connect with your community

No business thrives in isolation. Yet there have been countless times I’ve coached clients who have built their big thing without actually finding out if anyone wanted to buy it in the first place, and that is why they are now stuck. Identify your target audience—your tribe—and engage with them deeply. Understand their needs, desires, and pain points. Connection is invaluable, as it not only informs your product development but also builds the foundation for lasting customer relationships. Communication is key; listen more than you speak, and let their feedback shape your journey.

Embrace the Lean Startup model

Launch quickly, say yes and work it out along the way. The essence of the lean startup approach is to build a minimum viable product, measure its impact, and learn from the results. This cycle of building, measuring, and learning allows you to adapt rapidly, refining your offerings based on real-world feedback. It’s a process that values flexibility over perfection, ensuring your business evolves in alignment with your customers’ needs.

It’s Not the destination but the journey

From the initial leap of faith to the continuous process of learning and growing, when I looked back on my journey I realized that building a six-figure business in 12 months is as much about the internal transformation as it is about external success. It’s a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of community, and the unyielding belief in one’s vision.

This path isn’t for the faint-hearted. It demands courage, persistence, and a willingness to venture into the unknown. But for those who dare, it offers the ultimate reward: the freedom to live on your own terms, to build something meaningful, and to leave a lasting impact on the world.

Know that it’s not about the whole picture but those next right moves, one simple step. Then take the next right move and the next right move. Embrace the challenge, ignite your passion, and let’s build something extraordinary.
