Embracing winter magic: The Raclette Igloo Experience

- June 21, 2024 4 MIN READ

Winter in Sydney is about to get a deliciously cozy makeover, thanks to Vincent Hernandez and his creation, the Raclette Igloo Experience.

Nestled on the rooftop of the Broadway Shopping Centre, this unique event promises to transport attendees straight into a French alpine wonderland. From the twinkling snow arch to the inviting fire pits, it’s all designed to create unforgettable memories.

The birth of an idea

Vincent Hernandez, the visionary behind this experience, drew inspiration from his childhood in France. “Back when I grew up in France, in winter, my family would put on a nice fire and we would indulge all evening in Raclette,” Vincent reminisces. These cherished memories and his passion for sharing traditions sparked the idea to bring this unique experience to Australia. “Growing up, I would gather my friends for a Raclette party, so I thought it would be great to share this tradition with people in Australia,” he explains.

Crafting a winter wonderland

Vincent tells KBB the Raclette Igloo Experience isn’t just about the food; it’s about creating an entire atmosphere.

“What I love about creating this kind of experience is the theatrics around it and transporting people for the night into a French winter wonderland,” Vincent says.

Imagine stepping into a scene straight out of a postcard: private igloos, the gentle fall of snow, and the cozy warmth of a fire pit. It’s all meticulously crafted to set the mood for an extraordinary night out.

“It’s all about creating memories and setting up the mood for a night out, with something a little extraordinary,” Vincent explains.

The Raclette tradition

Raclette is more than just a dish; it’s a beloved tradition deeply rooted in French culture.

“Raclette is the most sold cheese in France, not camembert! Can you believe it?” Vincent exclaims.

Traditionally enjoyed in the Alps after a day of skiing, Raclette involves melting cheese and pairing it with various meats and condiments.

“It’s one of those traditions where you just create great memories around the table,” Vincent notes. His fondest memories are filled with friendly competition over who could eat the most Raclette, complete with cheeky moments of stealing his brother’s perfectly grilled cheese.

A social culinary adventure

One of the most compelling aspects of Raclette is its communal nature. “Guests gather around the table, melting the cheese the way they love it,” Vincent describes.

The process begins with preparing a charcuterie platter featuring at least four different meats, cutting the cheese into small rectangles, and setting up the Raclette machine in the middle of the table. According to Vincent, this communal approach to dining fosters a sense of togetherness, making it the perfect meal for gathering loved ones.

Perfect pairings

No French dining experience is complete without the perfect wine pairing. Vincent has curated a selection of wines from the mountains and other regions of France, each chosen to complement the flavours of the cheese and meat.

“Each igloo has its own wine fridge, keeping the bottles at perfect temperature,” he mentions. This attention to detail ensures that every aspect of the meal is enjoyed to its fullest.

A unique Sydney experience

What sets the Raclette Igloo Experience apart from other food and wine events in Sydney is its immersive nature.

“You are greeted in French, all the staff is French, let’s be honest, you are stepping into French territory and that’s cool,” Vincent laughs.

The authenticity of the experience, from the imported cheese to the French wine, combined with the cozy atmosphere, creates a truly unique event.

“Gathering around a fire pit roasting marshmallows helps to create bonding moments with your loved ones,” he adds.

Creating lasting memories

Indeed at its heart, the Raclette Igloo Experience is all about sharing. “Sharing food, sharing a moment, and creating long-lasting memories,” Vincent says.

He hopes that attendees will leave with their hearts and bellies full, carrying with them the warmth of the evening.

“We get this feedback a lot, so I feel like we are delivering on our promise to bring people together,” he adds.

Enhancing Sydney’s winter

While the recent icy winds from the Arctic may have led you to mourn Sydney’s usually mild winter weather, Vincent believes that the Raclette Igloo Experience adds a touch of European charm that’s sure to cheer you up even on the chilliest of days.

“The Raclette Igloo Experience is bringing this little ‘je ne sais quoi’, French and European love, and we share it with the people in Sydney, and that’s already something special,” he says. In fact Vincent invites everyone to step into this enchanting winter wonderland.

“When is the last time you brought your family or your friends together? You don’t need a special occasion to create great memories together,” he emphasises.

So, this winter, why not gather your loved ones and head to the rooftop of the Broadway Shopping Centre for a night of Raclette, wine, and unforgettable moments. The Raclette Igloo Experience awaits, ready to transport you to a French alpine wonderland right in the heart of Sydney.
