The response to our Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition has been massive, with over 50,000 votes cast over the last two weeks.  While the competition uncovered some incredible Aussie businesses doing amazing things, there can be only one winner.

Australia has voted… The business to emerge triumphant in the third annual Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition is…

The Compassionate Kitchen.

The Compassionate Kitchen is a great Aussie business run by couple Stephen Sumner and Joanne Buttigieg. It kicked off six years ago when Stephen and Joanna were looking for cruelty-free versions of traditional home-baked favourites and came up empty. Deciding they didn’t want their kids to miss out on tasty treats but wanting to ensure they had an ethical option, the couple branched out into the dessert business and opened The Compassionate Kitchen.

Founder Stephen Sumner said he and Joanne are overjoyed to have won the competition.

“We are so excited. We feel honoured that so many people got behind us and supported our family business.”

Much of the success of the business has come from the support of the vegan community and Stephen tells KBB he is extremely grateful for the backing they have received.

“Sustainability and ethics are key drivers for our business and it’s great to get support from likeminded people.”

Like many businesses, 2020 has been a challenging year for The Compassionate Kitchen, which make winning Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition that much sweeter.

“Winning this competition really validates the hard work we have put in over the past six years and all the sacrifices we have had to make. All the long hours, life challenges and curveballs we have endured have all paid off whilst maintaining a work/life balance with four young children.”

Kochie’s Business Builders editor Cec Busby said the breadth of businesses and services that took part in the competition showed the talent and skills of Australia’s family business owners. Busby congratulated all the businesses that entered the competition and described their journeys as inspiring.

“Family businesses are the heart of the nation – they provide so many of our essential services and deserve to be celebrated. The Compassionate Kitchen is a wonderful example of Aussie ingenuity and passion. I’m looking forward to learning more about their journey when they appear on Kochie’s Business Builders next year.”

Look out for The Compassionate Kitchen when they appear on Kochie’s Business Builders TV show in 2021.
