WHO IS AUSTRALIA'S FAVOURITE FAMILY BUSINESS?

Plants in a Box is a family business. The Prince family have been in horticulture for 2 generations. Launching Plants in a box now brings the third (and younger generation) into the business. It’s an intersection of old school handcrafted style of horticulture and content publishing and online retail.

We lead a creative team of 10 who dig plants just as much as we do and never shy of hard work. We’re just a bunch of plant nerds that simply love what we do.  Plants in a box is based deep in the sublime Currumbin Valley.

We are true believers that “some ideas come from the most unlikely source.”

Cinzia had a problem getting her youngest daughter, Lana, to eat breakfast before school. She wouldn’t have a meal in the morning but she would happily drink something. To give Lana's smoothies some sustenance Cinzia started to combine the nuts, seeds and superfood ingredients in her cupboard into pre-portioned boosters.

After proving to be such a hit at home, she began to make and sell these boosters to friends and local cafes. They were more popular than she could have ever imagined and Smoothie Bombs have grown organically from there.

Cinzia and Lana now run the business together. They're best friends! It’s been a challenge and a lot of hard work over the past 7 years but it’s their purpose and passion that keeps them going.

This family of Yoga teachers founded Australia’s most popular Yoga school in 1994 and held 60 classes a week nationally. It was 2012 when one of the family members was diagnosed with a serious illness that their focus changed..

Devoting themselves to endless hours of research and product testing they eventually discovered a natural solution from Australian Salt Lakes called ‘Magnesium Oil.’

Now, Amazing Oils is Australia’s #1 selling magnesium chloride and it’s an Australian, family-run company, based on the Sunshine Coast in QLD.

Sinchies was founded by Sam Spunner, launching her first product the 80ml in 2012, but the idea was founded in 2010. “Working in childcare I would see children come in with lunchboxes bursting of prepackaged food that was full of added sugar, artificial colours, flavors and preservatives. While convenient, there was minimal nutritional value in them. So I started thinking about a healthier options to fast food.”

“The idea didn’t come though until I was running my own family daycare when squeezy yoghurt took the market by storm; both parents and kids loved them. I saw how much children enjoyed their pouches of yoghurt and purees and how little ones with food intolerances missed out. There was one little girl who was intolerant to dairy and she would cry because she couldn’t have a pouch of her own. Solving her pain became my purpose and my African background where we reuse and repurpose everything, became my inspiration”

I never imagined a cardboard box could mimic the healing powers of the human heart.

Especially as I lay on the couch with two children, all of us miserably ill. Of course, my husband was away on a business trip, and my family lived (at that time) hundreds of kilometres away. Between runny noses, feverish and fitful sleep, and around the clock children’s television programs, I had a lightbulb moment: If only I had a care package containing everything I needed to feel better.

As soon as was I back on my feet I began boxing up an assortment of my favourite brands, treasured items and rescue remedies ready for the wonderful or woefully unpredictable moments life throws at us.

The first Bamboo Bubby Bag was created after my son was diagnosed with eczema at six months of age. While there are many different types of sleeping bags on the market, I struggled to find one that would fit him for longer than a couple of months, was made of lightweight fabric that wouldn’t aggrevate his skin and most importantly had handcovers to prevent him scratching.

Castle and Cubby are Kellie, Jonathan, Jethro and Shepard Stones and this is our little family business. Together we have a passion for salvaging and sourcing items that ooze character, style and can be repurposed. It was this shared interest that led us to create an inspiring and individual play space for our first son. Positive feedback, our child’s response, and the joy on this adventure led to an idea.

So we started Castle and Cubby, the business of creating quirky things from sustainable products for little people with BIG imaginations (and parents with great taste). Four years later and we are still creating and building outdoor play spaces for families across Australia.

Recycled and sustainable is, for us, the only way to go, to encourage our children’s creativity and imaginations and set them on the right path to appreciating these materials.

We are a little family in a big world following our dreams.

Etiko is a family owned and operated apparel, footwear and sports ball business that has had the respect and promotion of human rights since its founding in 2005.

We wanted to be 100% confident the apparel and footwear we were buying for our family hadn’t been made by a child or some poor worker being ripped off in a developing country. At the time this didn't exist, so we created it.

We constantly set the bar for upholding and campaigning the human rights of those working in traditionally exploitative industry supply chains.

2 Bent Rods came about after discussions with industry leaders such as Mr Bruce Alvey from Alvey Reels Australia and Dave “Nugget” Downie from Talking Fishing on Brisbane radio 4BC 1116 am and nuggetfishing.com.au.

2 Bent Rods began operating in December 2004. The first class was at Thompsons Beach at Victoria Point.Initial lessons where aimed at teaching kids the basics of safe and responsible shore-based fishing practices.

Our most mature student ( 92 year old “Eddie” who wanted to learn to impress his new lady friend) made us realise that there was a need for a wider range of programs.
