We love celebrating small business success stories and this month we will be shining a light on family businesses when we kick off our annual Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition.

Nominations for Australia’s Favourite Family Business 2020 is now open.

70 per cent of Australia’s businesses are family businesses. From massive family empires to your local corner store, Aussie family businesses employ millions and keep the economy ticking over. Family businesses clothe us, feed us, care for us, and even entertain us. Family businesses are the lifeblood of Australia’s economy.

Kochie’s Business Builders wants to shine a light on these pillars of our local community and reveal what makes Australian family businesses so great.

Why Australia’s Favourite Family Business

2020 has been a tough year for small business. Through the search to find Australia’s Favourite Family Business, we want to celebrate Australia’s family businesses and thank them for all the hard yards they put in to help our communities – and the nation – prosper.

Sunrise host and family business owner David Koch said many of Australia’s most popular businesses have been built from the blood, sweat and tears of families.

“Family business is the heart and soul of the Australian business community. So often they are multi-generational, entire families have an emotional, financial and time commitment in their success. They can bring families together and tear them apart. They are all-absorbing,” says Koch.
“That’s why family business success is such an incredible achievement and to be celebrated.”

Why you should nominate

Cinzia Cozzolino founder of Smoothie Bombs

Cinzia Cozzolino founder of Smoothie Bombs, the winner of the 2018 Australia’s Favourite Family Business award said the win raised the brand’s profile nationally.

“It was a fantastic experience for us. It gave us a lot of brand recognition, many more customers and increased our orders. Plus we got to meet Kochie,” she laughs.

Cinzia encourages other family business owners to enter the competition. “If you’re thinking of entering definitely go and do it – it was a fantastic experience for us, and i know it will be that for you too.”

In 2019 niche wine brand 8 KANGAROOS took away the title of Australia’s Favourite Family Business. Founder Mark Quinn said marketing was always a great challenge for his product which pairs great Australian wine with a distinctive kangaroo shaped bottle.

“Winning Australia’s Favourite Family Business afforded us prestige and exposure and legitimises our product to prospective retailers and customers,” Mark comments.

“We have been in the wine industry since the 90s and started 8 Kangaroos to create a new market niche within this industry. Our unique Kangaroo shaped bottles immediately allow our product to stand out as clearly different to any other. However, being unique doesn’t automatically equate to success and being a Family Business often means we work harder and longer than a paid job often not knowing if the day will bring prosperity or just another challenging day.

Mark says winning the award also allowed him to connect with other successful business owners and share ideas and troubleshoot problems.

“On the night of winning the award, I had the opportunity to meet other businesses and we shared successes and ways to overcome issues.

“While 2020 is no doubt one crazy unexpected year we have thrived selling more product in the last 6 months than the previous 2 years. I strongly recommend entering and urge you to be open and willing to listen and share with other family business to evolve and keep moving forward.”
