5 tips to start your own podcast

- May 15, 2021 2 MIN READ

Podcasts are all the rage. Listening to podcasts increased by 32 per cent in 2020 and that figure is likely to grow in 2021. In fact, the University of Canberra found one-third of Aussies listen to a podcast regularly.  So is your business missing out?

If you have a brilliant idea for a podcast but no idea where to start, Samantha Meurant shares her tips for starting a podcast without spending any money!

How I started my podcast

When I started my podcast I found every way that would save me money. With no sponsorship yet or backing from a company I just wanted to create a kick-butt podcast but not spend any money. So here are my top 5 tips to start a podcast for absolutely nothing!

1. Recording

This is obviously the basis of a podcast the recording of the episodes. If you aren’t ready to invest in a microphone you can use that thing that lives in your pocket… your smartphone. The microphones on your phone are actually pretty good, just use the dictation app and get recording. You’re able to clean up the audio if needed during the editing process.

2. Editing

Speaking of editing, you can download the program Audacity for free and use it for all your sound editing, clipping and trimming needs.

3. Podcast platform

There are lots of great podcast platforms out there but a very easy and free one to use is Soundcloud. You just need to set up a profile and get uploading. You can also embed the audio into blog posts on your website.

4. Website

You don’t have to spend a fortune on a web designer or even buy a domain name just yet. You can get started with a website so that you are growing your SEO juice now. Website platforms like WixShopify and Squarespace have free versions and are pretty simple with their drag and drop style setup. Make sure you link your website on your social media pages.

5. Cover art

You will need a killer cover art image to catch your audiences eye. Use the online free graphic design program Canva to create a cover image that suits your image and with tell everyone what your podcast is all about with one glance.

I hope these five tips have helped and given you some incentive to start that podcast yourself while knowing it doesn’t have to cost anything to get started.
