The Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has thrown a lifeline to Melbourne’s small business owners with the announcement of $10k grants available to businesses in the city and Mitchell Shire who are facing the brunt of tougher restrictions.
From 1159pm on Wednesday, August 5, the majority of the city’s businesses will be forced to close for the next six weeks, with only essential services to remain open during stage 4 restrictions.
Businesses in regional Victoria can also apply for assistance with grants of up $5,000 available.
Just Cuts CEO Amber Manning said the government’s offer of financial assistance was welcome but more needed to be done to help the state’s small business owners.
“We understand the need to take these steps including the necessity of shutting down businesses however there is the undeniable and growing tension small business owners, including our salon owners, face in having to continue to cover all the other incoming bills including rent,” said Manning.
“The Victorian Government’s move to offset some of this on impacted businesses via the additional grants is most welcome notwithstanding the fact that not all of our owners are eligible including a number who have been in business for less than 12 months. There is still a significant strain on our small business owners and unfortunately, it’s only going to continue so we need to be exploring additional measures such as assistance with payroll tax.”
“The reality is we need all State, Territory and the Federal Government to continue to move on stimulus and support measures to help us all get through this,” Manning said.
Businesses which have already received a Business Support Fund – Expansion grant, or have applied for one, will not need to re-apply. Successful applicants will automatically receive this additional allocation.
Applications for the program will be extended until 14 September 2020.
The premier stressed the grant program is in addition to the first round of the Business Support Fund, which closed on 1 June 2020.
