There’s no better excuse to knock back a whiskey and a Guinness than St Patrick’s Day. Given Australia’s links to Irish culture, you can bet that pubs and (Irish) clubs around the nation will be filled to the brim with revellers on March 17.

Many a backpacker has found themselves stumbling out of this Goulburn Street venue come midnight and this weekend will be no different. This famous Irish waterhole in the heart of the city will be offering live music, all-day Irish fry-ups at the upstairs eatery and plenty of Guinness on tap
PJ O’Brien’s (Sydney)
PJ O’Brien’s will be playing host to an Irish festival all weekend – making it the perfect place to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. Nestled on the corner of King and Clarence Street in the city’s business district, PJ O’Brien’s will kick off their celebrations on March 16. Expect live bands, Guinness and Kilkenny by the pint-load and uproarious revellers.
The Drunken Poet (Melbourne)
If you’re ducking to the Markets on the weekend, why not pop into The Drunken Poet for a quick pint. This cosy Irish bar offers live music from midday to 11pm and is sure to be jumping on St Patrick’s Day.
The Mercantile Hotel (Sydney)
A favourite with Sydney’s Irish ex-pat community, this pub is bound be filled to overflowing this weekend as locals and travellers hit The Rocks to celebrate St Paddy’s Day. Grab an Irish stew and a pint and settle back for some craic.
Finn McCools (Adelaide)
Tucked away in the Norwood Hotel Finn Mac Cools is a celebration of Irish culture, with 17 different ales and a slew of craft whiskeys on offer you’re certain to find a drop that will suit your palate.
Bridie O’Reilly’s (Melbourne)
Located in the heart of Chapel Street, Bridie O’Reilly’s offers plenty of fun for lovers of all things Irish, from hearty Irish stews to a good ol’ fashioned chips and curry. Expect this Melbourne CBD venue to be rocking on St Patrick’s Day when the venue kicks things off with a full Irish breakfast complete with a side of Guinness.
Buck Mulligans (Melbourne)
Fans of James Joyce will no doubt recognise the moniker of this Irish pub, which takes its name from a character in Ulysses. This Northcote bar come bookshop will be turning on the St Patrick’s Day celebrations by offering a pop-up speciality Irish whiskey bar – and you can’t get ore Irish than that!
JB O’Reillys (Perth)
If you know any Irish ex-pats that live in Perth, chances are they’ve spent some time at this pub which has a reputation for serving the best Guinness in the city. This Leederville legend is opening its doors at 730am on St Patrick’s Day with Irish breakfasts on offer and a full day of music and dance to celebrate.
Criterion Hotel (Sydney)
The Criterion is kicking off its St Patrick’s Day celebrations early this year with a party on St Patrick’s eve. Then the proud Irish venue will kick things up a notch on Saturday with a massive Irish shindig. Live bands will take to the stage from 3pm and their will be fabulous Irish fare all day.
Durty Nelly’s (Perth)
If you want to check out an authentic Irish pub then you can’t go past Durty Nelly’s which was designed and constructed in Ireland by Irish architects, using genuine Irish materials. It was then disassembled, transported to Shafto Lane in the heart of Perth and reassembled. From its traditional brewhouse to its ornate Victorian-era inspired bar Durty Nelly’s will provide a unique Irish experience for St Pat’s Day.
